King Ramkhamhaeng the Great

King Ramkhamhaeng the Great was the son. of King Sri Indrathit,the first king of Sukhothai. 
King Sri indrathit's queen was Nang Sueang. He has three sons and two daughters, the eldest son died when he was young, the middle son was named Ban Muang,
and the third son was King Ramkhamhaeng the Great.
King Sri lndrathit bestowed the titile "Phra Ramkhamhaeng" to the third son because he defeated Khum Sam Chon, the ruler of Mueang Chot in an elephant fight event.
After King Sri indrathit, his father, and King Ban Mueang, his brother passed away, king Ramkhamhaeng reigned as the third King of Phra Ruang Dynasty of Sukhothai.
lt was estimated that he died around the year of 1347,the time he regned was approximately 40 years.

King Ramkhamhaeng the Great was renowned for his genius in governance, economy, religion, arts and sciences.
Most importantly, King Ramkhamhaeng the Great invented the Thai alphabet around the year of 1286 B.E. which was evolved into Thai alphabet used until the present time.

History

The stone inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng was discovered in 1833 at a hill in an ancient Sukhothai Castle, Mueang District, Sukhothai Province by His Majesty King Mongkut while he was ordained.

King Ramkhamhaeng's Stone Inscription or the first main inscription, inscribed with characters on sides 1-2, 35 lines each, and sides 3-4, 27 lines each, containing information about the history of King Ramkhamhaeng, was of life in the Sukhothai period in terms of society, religion, culture, environment, govemance, trade, etc.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, graciously conferred upon Ramkhamhaeng University the Supannikar to be a Symbolic Tree of Ramkhamhaeng University.Currently, 
it was planted in front of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great Auditorum on January 18, 1999.
